Data Migration

Data migration is often a complex process. With m.a.x. it‘s standardized migration procedures and experience from numerous migration projects, legacy data is quickly and efficiently available in the new system.

Ihre Benefits
  • Valuable legacy data is also available in the new system
  • Standardized migration procedures reduce sources of error during data transfer and ensure time savings even with extensive legacy data
  • Implicit benefit: during migration, the legacy data is consolidated and validated
  • Many years of migration experience
  • Cutover migration or successive migration during live operation

Efficient Data Migration

Extracting, validating, converting, mapping, and transforming data: There are many aspects to data migration in order to make existing legacy data available for use in a new system. Whether switching from an old to a new system, updating an existing system, or providing data for an external system – this part of a project implementation must be analyzed and planned in a suitable migration concept to achieve efficient and error-free data migration during the rollout.

Data Migration

Can I still access my legacy data in the new system after a system change?

Yes, data migration is an integral part of our projects. We analyze data management in the old and new systems, develop the right migration concept for you, and migrate your legacy data to the desired target system – including ensuring early availability in test systems during the project.

Our database includes large volumes of data – how can I migrate these efficiently?

Especially in the case of large data volumes, we recommend establishing automated migration processes. Conversions, formatting, validations, and mapping from “old” to “new” are combined into a migration process – and work quickly and reliably regardless of the data volume.

How is sensitive data handled during migration?

If, for example, user accounts, access rights, or personal data are involved, the migration can be logged upon request, providing documentation of the migration.

What is the best way to migrate complex data and object structures?

After analyzing the legacy data, an exact mapping of the data and object structures is defined and implemented in an automated migration process. Automated migration saves time and reduces sources of error during data transfer. This ensures rapid availability in production and test systems.

Does migration potentially need to take place over a longer period for extensive legacy data?

Depending on requirements, there are alternative methods for migration. For example, by logically splitting the legacy data into smaller parts (divide & conquer), the migration can take place in stages using the delta principle. This allows for the parallel use of data in both the old and new systems.

Developing migration processes

After analyzing and comparing the old and new data structures, a migration process is developed. Mapping is used to link old data structures to new ones. If data formats or value ranges change, conversions must be defined. Changed or new application logic requires plausibility checks, which must also be applied to the legacy data. Before a migration, the legacy data must be validated. Incorrect data in the legacy system must be cleaned up before migration. It is not uncommon to encounter special cases that must also be handled systematically during the migration.

Once the migration processes are defined and established, the automated migration begins. Erroneous input data is recorded in error logs, which helps with the necessary data cleansing. Once migrated, the productive legacy data is also available for evaluating the new system.

The actual production migration can take place on a fixed cut-off date or successively using a so-called delta process during ongoing operations.

We would be happy to advise you on the analysis, the creation of a migration concept, and, of course, the execution of the migration.
